Tom Costanzo, the owner of Tomasino's Pizza, helped save the man around 8 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 4 after the man came running into his restaurant next to the West Redding Train Station yelling that his vehicle was stuck on the train tracks.
The man had been trying to turn into the restaurant's driveway when his vehicle became stuck. When Costanzo ran outside, the man was still in the vehicle when he heard the train horn blow.
Thinking fast, he helped the man escape the vehicle just seconds before it was hit by the train.
For his bravery, the Heroes Among Us organization operated by the Massachusetts State Lottery and the Boston Celtics heard about the incident and honored Costanzo as a "Hero Among Us," the group said.
The honor was bestowed on Monday, Jan. 13 when the Celtics hosted the Chicago Bulls.
